Red Bull Foiling Generation Powered By Sailmon

During the Volvo Ocean Race Finish week, we teamed up with Red Bull Foiling Generation, providing a live feed of the flying phantoms locations, speed and many other aspects during the semi final and final races as 32 of the most talented Dutch youth sailing talents battled it out for a spot in the Foiling Generation finals to be held in Miami. The boats were equipped with the newly released Sailmon App which turns every iPhone and Android device into an advanced sailing processor. The app makes all action on the water instantly available online, which they can log, share and compare with other sailors around the world. The finals were as close as it gets, with all the teams battling to get there phantoms flying, vying for the upper hand, the races had multiple lead changes as the boats battled for there chance to go to the final event in Miami.

Red Bull Foiling Generation Giving Young Sailors Wings
The Red Bull Foiling Generation is one of the biggest youth sailing programmes on the planet, holding regattas worldwide. The goal is to provide young sailors between the ages of 16-20 with the ability to pursue their career in hydrofoil sailing. The competitions also serve as training platforms for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, which is for competitors aged 19-25. These competitions train youth from all over the world on small foiling catamaran racers similar to those used in the America’s Cup. The sailors compete in a series of heats in identical boats with distinct colours, with the final race determining who will represent their country in the World Cup. During the event in the Netherlands the phantoms were equipped with a mobile device running the Sailmon App.

The Flying Phantoms
The Flying Phantom is a one-design catamaran capable of planing above the surface of the water due to curved daggerboards acting as hydrofoils. It is built by Phantom International, and is the boat used in the Red Bull Foiling Generation race series. The boat earns raves as the future of sailing because unlike other small boats, it uses hydrofoil technology to lift completely out of the water. The cutting-edge system allows it to hit blistering speeds of up to 35 knots – almost 40 mph – making it by far the quickest sailing boat of its size in the world, ideal for the Red Bull Foiling Generation

Along with the live data, we partnered up with VideobriX, to provide live coverage of the race, from the beach, the pier and on the water.
