Van Uden Dutch Sailing Champions in ORC 1 class
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Rotterdam Offshore Sailing Team & Ker 46 Van Uden took victory in the ORC 1 class last weekend at the Dutch Championships. Lobke Berkhout, former Olympic sailor, looked back on an exciting race. She gave her first reaction to the Noordhollands Dagblad: ”The battle with the other boats was very exciting. We had to sail really hard to beat them.”
A month ago the team, coached by Volvo Ocean Race veteran Gerd-Jan Poortman, took an incredible third place at The Hague Offshore Sailing Worlds. The performance of this weekend makes the season for this young talented sailing team even more memorable. ”After the World Cup we did not plan to participate during the Dutch Championships”, said Berkhout to the Noordhollands Dagblad. ”But it went so well that we decided to participate. For three days we sailed different races off the coast of Zeeland and the battle between our boat, the Van Uden, and the other boats was very exciting. Our boat is a lot faster than the Elke, the boat of Frans Rodenburg, but on the basis of their handicap, those men in the rankings get closer each time. We had to sail hard to beat them.”
Although the young sailors eventually proved to be the best, some mistakes were made in the beginning. The team was modified in a number of places compared to Sailing Worlds. This meant that the sailors had to get used to each other again. ”In the first offshore race we made some mistakes. But there was a good wind and we flew over the water. We went really fast and finally won that race anyway. We were surprised about that,” says Lobke. ”Furthermore, we made little mistakes at the inshore races in all operations on the boat, so that went well. The battle with the other boats was very exciting. It was close to each other, but thanks to a few stable races, we took the victory.”
Congratulations to the Sailmon equipped Rotterdam Offshore Sailing Team & Ker 46 Van Uden from the Sailmon team. Going from strength to strength as seen by their results. The team can look back on what was a fantastic year and with more to come in the coming years!
